Elfriede (Schroeder) ThorykNovember 21, 1921 ~ December 29, 2017 (age 96)
Elfriede Schroeder Thoryk was born in Germany and lived there through World War II.
After the war, everything was in ruins and no hope for work. Then in 1951, she and her husband and three children emigrated to the U.S. Her husband had a sister and a brother in Syracuse, New York where they lived for 40 years. Her husband worked for Crucible Steel Mill as a crane operator and she did all kinds of work until she spoke better English. Then she worked in a bank for five years. When her husband retired after 30 years, he got sick and she needed help. In 1992 they moved to Duluth, Georgia to be near their daughter and in 1995 he passed away after 50 years of marriage.
She lived in Duluth and she had three survivors, a son, Horst Thoryk of Norristown, PA, a daughter, Ingrid Kerber of Duluth, GA and another son, Rolf Thoryk of Carmel, IN. They also had seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also has relatives in Germany, a sister-in-law, two nieces and three nephews.
