Eugene Wesley Sawhill, age 85 of Duluth, GA died May 5, 2017. A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 11, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Bill Head Funeral Home Duluth Chapel, with the Reverend Patricia Stevens officiating. Gene was born in Flint, Michigan in 1931 and married Dona Rae Bowman in Detroit, Michigan in 1952. After graduating from Central Michigan University in 1954, he served two years in the U.S. Army at the Tokyo Army hospital. Trained as an accountant, he began his working career teaching business and accounting with the Davenport Business Schools in 1956, and retired in 1994 from Equifax, where he was vice president and controller. Gene was devoted to his family, serving in a multitude of supporting roles including: scoutmaster, soapbox derby builder, coach and cheerleader, mechanic, gardener, magician’s assistant, and patron of the arts. He taught his sons carpentry, independence and bad puns; tried to teach them baseball and car mechanics; but failed to teach them anything about fishing. He finally got the daughters he always wanted when his sons married, and he enjoyed spoiling his grandchildren. He was a member of Mt. Paran Church of God and enjoyed singing with his wife in the church choir. Gene and Dona moved to Duluth in 1997. He enjoyed meeting and serving his neighbors at Nesbitt Crossing, maintained a vibrant social circle at the Satellite Promenade Waffle House, and tenderly cared for his beloved wife Dona during her declining health. Gene is preceded in death by his wife Dona, with whom he was married 62 years, and his sister Martha Everett of Portland, OR. He is survived by his sister Doris Johannessen of Eugene, OR and brother Lloyd Sawhill of Athens, GA; sons and daughters-in-law Ronald and Lisa Sawhill of Watkinsville, GA, Steven and Mari Sawhill of Oslo, Norway, and Roger and Joanna Sawhill of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren Katie and her husband T.J., Chris, Jeff, Nicholas, Christopher and his wife Destiny, and Katherine; and great-granddaughter Geneviève.
