BENSON, Charles Frederick, Jr., Retired United States Army
Lt. Col. Charles F. Benson, Jr. (80) of Suwanee, GA, husband of Patricia Zepeda Benson, died on August 30, 2019.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2019, at 11 o’clock at The Catholic Church of St. Monica in Duluth, GA with Father Jack Durkin serving as Celebrant. Interment will be in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta following the reception.
Lt. Col. (Ret) Benson was born on June 14, 1939 in Gainesville, GA, son of Charles F. Benson and Ruth Cox Benson. He graduated from Gainesville High School and North Georgia College with a business degree, later receiving his Master’s in Education from Pepperdine University. He joined the Army in 1961, serving in Korea and later serving during the Vietnam War as a combat medic, assisting and rescuing wounded soldiers and as Assistant to the Surgeon General. In the later part of his military career, he served as a member of the administrative staff for several military hospitals. His decorations included the bronze star medal with three oak leaf clusters, the meritorious service medal with two oak leaf clusters, the air medal, the Army commendation medal and the combat medical badge. He retired from the United States Army after 23 years of service.
Upon retirement from the U.S. Army, he served the State of Georgia as the EMS Training Coordinator for 20 years. He enjoyed serving his church as a Knight of Columbus, a faithful volunteer of yearly Catholic Camp and coordinated many pilgrimages to EWTN along with other volunteer projects. He was awarded Man of the Year at St. Monica in 2015. He was a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling extensively with his wife, volunteering in his church and playing with his grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Patricia Inez Benson of Suwanee; daughter, Elizabeth B. Keneally and her husband Kevin J. Keneally of Roswell and Bonnie E. Coffin of Cumming; son, Charles F. Benson, III and his wife Samantha B. Benson, MD of Milton; eight grandchildren, Rachael, Rebecca and Maria Keneally, Emma and Elizabeth Coffin, Charlie, Madelyn and Chandler Benson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Catholic Church of St. Monica, 1700 Buford Highway, Duluth, GA 30097.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3rd, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Duluth Chapel, (770) 476-2535.
