Duane Houghton Brown, age 86, of Stone Mountain and Alexandria, VA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 12, 2019 in Stone Mountain, Georgia following complications from an ongoing illness.
Duane was born on September 14, 1933 in Alexandria, Virginia, the only child of Frank and Ella Brown. He attended Mars Hill University in North Carolina and the University of Richmond in Virginia where he earned his degree in accounting. At the age of 19, too young to sit for the CPA exam, he joined the U.S. Army where he proudly served overseas. Following his military service, obtaining a rank of Specialist 5th Class, he was honorably discharged and he returned to Alexandria where he obtained his CPA certificate, married the love of his life, Barbara Brown, on January 25, 1958 and started his career at RJ Rankin which became Price Waterhouse. He continued his career at the International Monetary Fund in Washington D.C. where he served as Chief Accounting Officer until his retirement. After retiring, Duane, a CPA and CFP, took occasional consulting jobs for the Monetary Fund that sent him across the globe for short work assignments, taught accounting at Northern Virginia Community College and started a tax preparation business from his home.
Fondly remembered as “Boo” or Grandpa to his grandchildren, Duane could be quite a character with a “bit of a stubborn streak” who always enjoyed a lively debate. He was highly intelligent and practical and had a great sense of humor and an affinity for the written word. Always quick with a comeback, he often had his children and grandchildren laughing or shaking their heads in amusement. He loved books, music and had a lifetime love of football and baseball, rarely missing a game played by his beloved Washington Redskins or Atlanta Braves. He was extremely patriotic and felt honored to have served his country. While quite proud of his family and his accomplishments, he was always generous in his willingness to help others. A spiritual man, he had great faith in God and served many years as an elder in his church, Decatur Presbyterian. He was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father and an absolute pushover when it came to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be tremendously missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.
Duane is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Barbara S. Brown of Stone Mountain, Georgia and Alexandria, Virginia; two daughters and their spouses, Kimberly and Gary Sekulow of Stone Mountain, Georgia and Lynn and Cesar Fazz of Yuma, Arizona; grandchildren, Bryan Casey, Adam Sekulow, Evan Fazz, Jennifer Stringfellow and Alexander Fazz; and great-grandchildren, Kaden, Connor and Cora Casey, Sloane and Sutton Sekulow and Emilia and Elliott Fazz.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 4, 2019 at Bill Head Funeral Home, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel.
