On Thursday, May 31, 2018, the U.S. Army lost Corporal Melvin L Plate, 97, who was inducted on July 21, 1942 to his discharge November 4, 1945. He served overseas during WWII in the Aleutian Islands in the Pacific.
He was a member of the American Legion for over 70 years beginning in Hinsdale, Illinois, Post 250, and later transferring his membership to Jefferson Legion, Post 56, under the Commander Gene Bennett.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mildred Grace, his son, Malvin Lee and his great granddaughter, Taylor Layman.
He is survived by his daughter, Judi Garner (Richard); granddaughters, Kelly Strickland (Mark), Heidi Russell (Kenny), Rebecca Creath (Daniel) and Charlotte McKinney-Smith (Weaks); grandsons, Adam Garner (Patty) and Jason Garner (Becky); great grandchildren, Kelsey Layman, Anniston, Bradley and Cameron Russell, Micah and Madison Creath, Jacob Garner (Allie), Ryan Garner (Morgan) amd Emily and Stephen Garner; nephews, Tom and Jim Plate.
He is also survived by his loving furry companion of 15 years, "Pepper", who has shared his home and lap and is thoroughly missing him.
He was a member of the Galiee Church in Jefferson, Georgia.

His funeral service will be Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at 1:00 pm at Bill Head Funeral Home, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memory Gardens in Tucker with full military honors provided by the U.S. Army.
