October 2, 1924 ~ April 14, 2019 (age 94)

Obituary

James Norris Allen, 94, of Duluth, passed to eternal life on April 14, 2019, with his loving daughter holding his hand.

Born in Forsyth County, Georgia, Allen lived in metro Atlanta, Macon, Statesboro and Jesup during his lifetime.  After graduating from Cumming High School in 1943, Allen enlisted in the United States Navy and served in communications in New Guinea and the Philippines during World War II.  An outstanding business entrepreneur, his many ventures included owning a rural grocery store, working as a bookkeeper for White Motor Company, joining Amoco Oil Company as a night watchman and being promoted ultimately into sales and real estate management, and investing in his own businesses including an Amoco distribution business, Allen Oil Company, an auto parts store and a Hallmark card and gift shop.

A man of great gentleness, wisdom, strength, faith and character, Allen had many talents.  He used his love of singing as a gift to his church choir and brought pleasure to many listeners with his exceptional talent playing rhythm guitar and singing vocals in a number of bands, the last being “The Country Junction".  Allen was honored for his accomplishments with his induction into the Georgia Country Music Hall of Fame.  His gift for carpentry enabled him to build furniture, cabinetry and homes for himself, his children and his friends.  He was also a skilled auto mechanic and handy man.

Above all, he was a dedicated Christian, an active community leader and a loving and devoted family man.  He served as an ordained deacon in the church and was elected vice president of the Chamber of Commerce and president of the Jesup Rotary Club.  He fulfilled all the dreams of his wife and was a generous father who provided a strong compass for his children and extended family to the day of his death.  All who knew him were greatly blessed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, JoAnn Terry Allen and their infant son, Timothy Allen.  He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Terry and Lisa Allen of Athens, Tammy and Mark Danzey of Johns Creek and Trent and Rhonda Allen of Athens; grandchildren, Adrian Allen, Tyler Phillips, Parker Allen, Savanna Osburn, Stephen Danzey and Sydnie Danzey.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Duluth with Rev. Keith Murdock, Rev. Mark Danzey and Dr. Mark Hearn officiating.  Burial will follow at Peachtree Memorial Park in Peachtree Corners.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, April 16th, from 2:00 - 4:00 and 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Bill Head Funeral Homes & Crematory, Duluth Chapel, (770) 476-2535.
