Lifelong resident and true lover of Duluth, Robert C. (Bobby) Jones, age 91, ended his struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease on April 1, 2018.
Following in the footsteps of his Duluth grandfather, Emory Jones, who had a lumber yard, grist mill, cotton gin, blacksmith shop and other businesses, Bobby could build, repair or recreate anything. He grew up fighting for everything he acquired throughout his life due to his unrelenting work ethic. He served in the Pacific as a Navy Seabee during World War II and one of his most cherished experiences was traveling with other Honor Flight veterans to the WWII monument in Washington.
He lived his life through music, playing piano and dancing every chance he got. He followed NASCAR from the early days at Lakewood to the Daytona beaches and later to the Daytona Raceway. He retired from L.B. Foster Company after a long and successful career. Bobby dedicated many years to baseball, first as an outstanding player on the Duluth “Town Team” and later as an instrumental force in the development of Little League baseball in Duluth. An avid hunter, he enjoyed the company of many friends on hunting trips to the Western U.S. and Canada.
At the age of 68, he picked up a golf club and never looked back. He immediately excelled, barely missing the professional level status. He only gave up golf to care for his beloved Frannie when she experienced a major illness 10 years ago.
Bobby joined the Duluth Masonic Lodge #480 F&AM 69 years ago and was a member of Duluth First United Methodist Church where he proudly served as an usher until he was no longer able. With his undying team mentality, he actively participated as a volunteer in the Duluth Fall Festival for many years.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Rita Jones Westbrook. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Frances Roberts Jones; daughter, Linda Jones Tonge; son, Robert C. Jones, Jr. (Sandy); grandchildren, Jack S. Tonge, III (Trey), Zachary Tonge and Emily Tonge. He found another baseball buddy in his two-year-old great grandson, Knox Darlington.
Visitation will be held at Bill Head Funeral Home, Duluth Chapel, on Thursday from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. A celebration of his life will be held at Duluth First United Methodist Church on Friday, April 6, 2018 at 11:00am followed by interment at Duluth Church Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made in his memory to the Duluth Church Cemetery, % Annette Summerour, 3642 Knox Drive, Duluth, GA 30096 or to Duluth First United Methodist Church.
