- About Us
Stephen N. Smith (Steve) of Tucker passed away suddenly at home on Saturday, January 20, 2018.
Steve was a 1965 graduate of Tucker High School and always took great pride in his involvement with putting the Volkswagen Beetle in the hallway for the senior prank.
Steve joined the Air Force in 1966 and selflessly served two tours in Vietnam and California, one tour in Alaska, Texas, Nebraska, South Carolina, and Germany.
He was also retired from Gwinnett County Fleet Management and the Centers for Disease Control, (CDC).
Steve was the happiest sitting in his boat or on a pier with a fishing pole in his hand, however his most admirable adventure was portraying Santa Claus at Gwinnett Place Mall for quite a few years. He cherished the children that sat upon his lap and he was extremely humbled by the innocence of each and every child. Steve kept every single Santa letter that he has ever received and it was not uncommon for him to be stopped while out with his family and listen to the wishes of a child, always with a twinkle in his eye, and he took great pride in sharing his North Pole adventures!
Steve is survived by his devoted wife of 47 years, Sharon, daughters, Melissa Volk (Michael) of Lula, Jennifer Smith (Eva) of Maysville, Lisa Burbage (Jason) of Covington, sister, Kathi Hooper of Loganville, 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends and his beloved Great Pyrenees, Fisher.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Norris & Ellene Smith of Tucker and his son, Mickey Smith of Loganville.
Through his final act of kindness and selflessness, four people will receive the gift of sight. We are blessed to know that they will be able to experience the beauty of this world, just as Steve did.
The funeral will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, January 24, at Mountain West Church in Stone Mountain with full military honors. He will be escorted from the funeral home to the church by the Patriot Guard Riders. There will be no graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the USO or the Gary Sinise Foundation in Steve’s honor.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 23, from 5:00 - 8:00 pm at Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory, Lilburn/Tucker Chapel, (770) 564-2726.
