Suzanne H. Weiss (Susie) passed away June 27, 2019.
She was born in Bedford, Indiana to the late John and Johanna Herley on Dec. 4, 1932. Susie was the youngest of four, and the only sibling to venture south to Georgia. At the suggestion of her aunt, uncle and cousins, Susie decided to take them up on their offer to join them in Atlanta after attending Indiana University for a couple of years. Susie became an employee of Citizens & Southern Bank on Broad Street in downtown Atlanta and became a parishioner of the Cathedral of Christ the King. It was there, as a member of the Cathedral Club, that she met her husband, Jim Weiss. They married September 12, 1959. Five years later, Jim and Susie moved to Northcrest Subdivision in Doraville to raise their two children. The Weiss family became one of the founding families at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Chamblee. Holy Cross was one of many organizations that Susie volunteered her time and talent. She was also a volunteer for the Ladies Auxiliary at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and was a parent volunteer at Pleasantdale Elementary School and at St. Pius X Catholic High School. Susie loved to play bridge and was in several ladies bridge clubs including Northcrest and at Holy Cross. Susie was also a long-time member of the Northcrest Hoe & Hope Garden Club, and played ALTA tennis at Northcrest Swim and Tennis Club. Susie was a homemaker and stay-at-home parent, a profession that often gets overlooked by today’s standards. The marvelous way she had of networking on behalf of her kids when they were entering the workforce is just one of many examples of her maternal super powers. The vocation of motherhood was a calling Susie proudly accepted and something at which she excelled.
Pre-deceased by only six weeks is her husband, James Weiss. Susie is also predeceased by her brother, Charles Herley; sister, Elizabeth Fraser; sister, Mary Ellen Inman; and nephew, Tom Herley. She is survived by her son, Chuck of Duluth; daughter, Catherine (Lavallee); son in-law, Michael Lavallee of The Villages, FL; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A funeral mass will be said at 11:00 AM on Tuesday July 9. 2019 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Tom Reist. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 8, 2019 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Bill Head Funeral Homes and Crematory Lilburn/Tucker Chapel 770-564-2726.
