Charlotte was born on September 20, 1922 to the late Rudolph and Martha Preston of Atlanta. She was married to Sam J. Sorrell for over 60 years until his death in 2005. She was one of the first female officers with the Dekalb County Police Department, working as a crossing officer. She later went to work with Macy's and was the first woman to work in the rug department as a commissioned sales person. She loved her job and belonged to the "Macy's Women's Sorority" and enjoyed the friendships she developed over the years. She retired from Macy's with over 25 years of service. Charlotte loved vacationing at the beach and had a huge passion for reading. As a hobby, she collected a large library of cookbooks, dolls, estate jewelry, china, crystal and depression glass. Her greatest love was entertaining her family and friends. She was an amazing cook and loved hosting all of the family holiday gatherings. She has left her family with many traditions and stories that will live on forever. We will miss her big heart, generosity and her moxie.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her youngest son, Virgil R. (Buster) Sorrell, her sisters, Elizabeth Mooney, Jeanette Lindsey and Marlene Chewning and her brothers, Rudolph Preston and Tom Preston. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Sam. J. Sorrell, Jr. and his wife Frances of Monroe; daughter-in-law, Jean; 6 loving grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law; Gene and Nancy Preston of Fayetteville; brother-in-law, Billy Meadow of Atlanta; many nieces and nephews.
